“One of my greatest strengths as the MPRB President was my ability to bring Commissioners together around shared goals in spite of what are often very different visions and agendas of the various Commissioners.”
Former Park Board President Tom Nordyke
Meet Tom Nordyke
I moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota, were I graduated with a History degree. I fell in love with the many great things that this City has to offer and I have never left! The Park System was no small part of what I fell in love with and what I have enjoyed about this City for so many decades.
I am married to a WONDERFUL man named Tom Hines and with our dog “Turbo”, we live in the CIDNA Neighborhood, which I have called home for over 20 years. We are active in the arts in the Twin Cities and enjoy our time sailing, biking and traveling when we can. And of course Turbo always likes a good walk in the park.
My Park Board Service
I’ve served on the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board from 2006-2010, and I was elected as President of the Park Board from 2009-2010. During my years on the Board and under my leadership as President we were able to bring the Board together after years of acrimony and difficult relationships with senior MPRB staff. We were able to heal the differences with the staff and to bring unity to the Board around common visions and goals for the Park System.
Some of the successes of my time on the Park Board:
•MPRB Comprehensive Plan 2007 – 2020
•Launching the Minneapolis Parks Foundation
•Lake of the Isles renovation
•Repaved Kenwood Parkway
•Launched renovation plan for Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center
If I am elected my main priorities will be:
1. Implement the Comprehensive Plan 2007–2020 & The 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan.
2. Expand programming and recreational opportunities for youth.
3. Implementation of the Park Board Racial Equity Action Plan.
My Priorities for the 4th District will be:
•Continue the RiverFirst Initiative and Downtown Service Area Master Plan
•Finish the renovations and upgrades to Loring Park including paths, tennis courts, lighting and Berger Fountain.
•Work on Bassett Creek restoration in the Bryn Mawr & Harrison Neighborhoods
•Monitor the SWLRT Project and mitigate any negative impacts on the Grand Rounds parks.
And finally, to provide experienced and sane leadership to the nation's number one Park system!
For my friends on the Riverfront - I voted AGAINST CROWN HYDRO TWICE while on the Park Board and would VOTE "NO" on Crown Hydro again!!!!
Some of My Relevant Experience

My Professional Life
Professional, I have twenty plus years of experience in the unique field of “Affordable Housing and Real Estate Development for the Arts” has given me a good objective outlook of what it takes to turn an initiative from an idea to a finished project. My understanding of government relations along with historic preservation, and affordable housing financing over the past twenty years has made me a leader in this field.
I successfully help the revitalization of cities through historic preservation, economic development and the arts. As a vanguard in the field of the arts for 20 years, I have spearheaded over 30 arts focused real estate projects with over $1.5 billion in financing across 26 states and Canada. My track record demonstrates a history of creating win-win strategies that benefit preservationists, developers and the arts community. I am committed to building creative communities that support and sustain the arts.
I began my career in this creative work as Vice President for Artspace Projects, Inc., the national leader in the field of developing affordable space that meets the needs of artists. I managed the operations of the Real Estate Development, Consulting, Asset Management and Property Management Divisions. I worked alongside the President and Board to transform the organization from a local non-profit with an annual budget of $60,000 into America’s leading developer of space for the arts.
Since 2003 as W+Noordijk, inc., I have provided independent consulting on issues of real estate acquisition, finance, design and marketing.
My clients have included many of the major cities and foundations across the United States. I have worked internationally as well on projects as far as the University of Belgrade in Serbia and Gallery Magazine in Guangzhou, China.
Since 2003 as W+Noordijk, inc., I have provided independent consulting on issues of real estate acquisition, finance, design and marketing. This has continued my passion and love for creating affordable live/work spaces for creative artists.
